When was the last time you got up on your roof to check your gutters? If it’s been a while, you should probably go take a look. Regular gutter cleaning is one of the most overlooked home maintenance procedures. This is of course understandable; you can’t normally see the condition that your gutters are in. However, this excuse won’t prevent the damage that will be caused by a poorly maintained gutter system. Here are a few good reasons why you should make sure to clean your gutters regularly.
Prevent Water Damage
Cleaning your gutters will prevent water damage to your roof. But aren’t roofs waterproof? No they aren’t. Roofing material is not completely waterproof. It is sufficiently waterproof to prevent rain from penetrating. However, if water begins to pool on your roof due to clogged gutters, that water will eventually find its way through your shingles.
Keep Out Pests
Cleaning your gutters can prevent pests from invading your property. Many pests are attracted to moisture that can thrive in gutters clogged with leaves and debris. If water begins to pool on your roof, this becomes the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Since each female can lay a few hundred eggs that can mature to an adult in just a few days, you can quickly have a major infestation.
Other pests that love to infest gutters include rodents, bees, hornets, wasps, birds, termites, and carpenter ants. These pests can bring disease and do serious damage to your property. Once they arrive, it may take more than cleaning your gutters to remove them entirely. It’s important to clean your gutters regularly so this doesn’t happen.
Even in a light rainfall the amount of water that collects on the roof of your home is substantial. The purpose of your rain gutters is to provide a way to collect that water and drain it in such a way that the water flows away from your home. If your gutters and downspouts get clogged, this water will flow over the sides of your roof and pool around the edges of your home. As this water sinks into the ground it can start to erode the foundations of your home. If temperatures drop, this water can freeze and cause significant damage.
Cleaning out gutters may seem like a chore, but it is an important preventative measure. Repairing water damage to your roof, walls, and foundation will be much more labor intensive and costly. Trying to remove pests will be exhausting. You’ll be much better off if you just take the time to perform a little upkeep on your gutters every once in a while.
